About the Performance

Kuchipudi is one of the eight major Indian classical dance forms originated in a village named Kuchipudi in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh as a dance-drama performance with its roots in the ancient Hindu Sanskrit text of Natya Shastra. The traditional Kuchipudi was performed by all males’ troupe.

Tharangam-Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini is a Sanskrit opera authored by Narayana Teertha. The songs are in chaste Sanskrit and clear diction and are rich in poetic quality. However, today’s piece -Tharangam is not written by Narayana Teertha. The wonderful experiments of Padmabhusham Guru Dr. Vempati chinna Satyam transformed this beautiful Keerthanam, written by Oottukad Venkata Subba Iyer in the glory and splendor of Lord Krishna, into one of the best Tharangams executing divine Abhinaya (facial and body expression), laya (enchanting grace), gripfill rhythm and intricate foot-work on a brass plate while depicting the enormous qualities of Lord Krishna.
